Review by Ken Dryden
In the early '60s Oscar Peterson befriended producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, who recorded Peterson on a number of occasions in his private studio while the veteran pianist was still signed to Verve. Action is made up of the earliest sessions recorded by Brunner-Schwer, featuring Peterson with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen circa 1963 and 1964. Before an audience invited by the producer, the trio begins with a midtempo "At Long Last Love," followed by a gently swinging treatment of Billy Taylor's infrequently performed "Easy Walker" and an understated interpretation of "Tin Tin Deo." Peterson's lyricism is at its peak in his arrangements of "I've Got a Crush On You" and "A Foggy Day." But it is the trio's extended and intricate workout of "Like Someone in Love," clocking in at just over 11 minutes, that leaves the most lasting impression. Not only is Peterson extremely reserved, but Brown's first-rate solo and Thigpen's delicate brushwork help to make this track a masterpiece. Previously reissued as a part of the Exclusively for My Friends box set in 1992, this Super Audio disc features even better sound.

Track List:
1. At Long Last Love (Porter) 5:01
2. Easy Walker (Taylor) 9:46
3. Tin Tin Deo (Fuller, Pozo) 5:42
4. I've Got a Crush On You (Gershwin, Gershwin) 5:22
5. A Foggy Day (Gershwin, Gershwin) 4:38
6. Like Someone in Love (Burke, VanHeusen) 11:18

One of a number of memorable albums recorded by Oscar Peterson for MPS during the mid-'60s, Girl Talk was compiled from several live studio sessions taped between 1964 and 1966, with bassist Sam Jones and either Bobby Durham or Louis Hayes on drums. Peterson's romping right hand helps this normally bland show tune. The pianist's imaginative unaccompanied introduction to "I'm in the Mood for Love" adds a new dimension to this old chestnut, with the rhythm section making a belated entrance; it is rather unusual to hear the trio play on just one song for 17 minutes. The title track, an overlooked gem jointly written by Bobby Troup and Neal Hefti, finds the leader in a bluesy mood. The relaxed but jaunty treatment of "Robbin's Nest" follows a powerful medley of "I Concentrate on You" and "Moon River" to wrap up this highly recommended session, which sounds even better due to the Super Audio remastering of this edition.

Track List:
1. On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)   4:26
2. I'm in the Mood for Love   17:22
3. Girl Talk   5:40
4. I Concentrate on You/Moon River   6:30
5. Robbin's Nest  6:22

Review by Ken Dryden
The third volume of Oscar Peterson's Exclusively for My Friends series, all recorded with an invited audience in the warm studio of producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, features live trio sessions with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham. The CD opens with an unusual medley of Ray Brown's "Waltzing Is Hip" (played with gusto) and a gently swinging "Satin Doll." The influence of Art Tatum is apparent during his intricate runs within "Love Is Here to Stay," while the multifaceted original "Sandy's Blues" (dedicated to his wife) combines a dark mood with a swinging setting. The lighthearted waltzing treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" is pure joy, while another original, "Noreen's Nocturne," is simply a showstopper. Previously available as part of a four-CD box set, this single-disc Super Audio edition noticeably improves the sound of these vintage sessions.

Track List:
1. Waltzing Is Hip (Brown, Wayne)  6:11
2. Satin Doll (Ellington, Mercer, Strayhorn)  10:05
3. Love Is Here to Stay (Gershwin, Gershwin)  4:54
4. Sandy's Blues (Peterson) 9:34
5. Alice in Wonderland (Fain, Hilliard)  4:46
6. Noreen's Nocturne (Peterson) 5:20

Review by Ken Dryden
It is surprising that Oscar Peterson's first solo piano album was not recorded until this 1968 session for MPS. Peterson took advantage of the brilliant instrument, terrific studio, and his incredible technique to produce one of the best recordings of his career. The nine-song program sticks almost exclusively to established standards, with the exception of one track. "Someone to Watch Over Me" demonstrates not only his rather unique two-handed runs (both played in unison) at high tempo, but also a bit of stride piano and a delicate closing chorus. "Perdido" sounds like it will explode at any minute, with Peterson's foot keeping time as he devours the piece whole. His refreshing exploration of "Body and Soul" adds a lovely improvised introduction, while the body of the arrangement mixes a bit of lyricism with a lot of showmanship. Jazz musicians had only started exploring "Who Can I Turn To?" a few years earlier, but Peterson's stunning interpretation is in a class by itself. The decades-old "Bye Bye Blackbird" sounds hackneyed in the wrong hands, but Peterson's unusual voicings give it a poignancy not present on most recordings. The pianist sings along softly to himself throughout most of his joyful rendition of "Lulu's Back in Town," incorporating a bit of stride piano into a swinging performance. "Little Girl Blue" is a gem by Rodgers & Hart that tends to be overlooked, but Peterson's delicate arrangement of this gorgeous ballad has much to recommend it. The pianist's brief romp through "Take the 'A' Train" closes the disc with a flourish. This session has been reissued previously by several labels, though this hybrid Super Audio edition easily eclipses all previous editions. Highly recommended.

Track List:
1. Someone to Watch Over Me (Gershwin, Gershwin)  4:18
2. Perdido (Drake, Lengsfelder, Tizol)  6:19
3. Body and Soul (Eyton, Green, Heyman, Sour)  4:38
4. Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me) (Bricusse, Newley) 5:04
5. Bye Bye Blackbird (Dixon, Henderson)  4:58
6. I Should Care (Cahn, Stordahl, Weston)  4:51
7. Lulu's Back in Town (Dubin, Warren) 2:12

Review by Ken Dryden
The fifth volume of Oscar Peterson's Exclusively for My Friends series is another lively trio affair with Sam Jones and Bobby Durham, though the album title Mellow Mood is a bit deceptive. "In a Mellow Tone" plunges in full force with a bluesy performance, with the audience responding to Peterson's opening solo as Durham switches from brushes to sticks. Peterson's amusing detour into Mercer Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and Jones' driving bass add to its appeal. His arrangement of Horace Silver's "Nica's Dream" begins quietly before he slowly turns on the turbochargers in an inspired performance. Gone is the overly dramatic introduction to "On Green Dolphin Street" heard during the earlier 1961 sessions at the London House; this interpretation is far more compelling as it doesn't seek to overwhelm the listener with the pianist's technique. The snappy take of "Summertime" is infused with a blues feeling in a brisk setting, while "Who Can I Turn To" evokes the memory of Art Tatum, though this composition was obviously never recorded by Oscar's good friend. Peterson fires up the tempo as Jones and Durham join him. Reissued as a part of a four-CD set in 1992, this single-disc Super Audio edition gives the listener the feeling of being in the studio as the performances initially took place.

Track List:
1. In a Mellow Tone (Ellington, Gabler)  6:07
2. Nica's Dream (Silver)  7:56
3. Green Dolphin Street (Kaper, Washington)  6:27
4. Summertime (Gershwin, Gershwin, Heyward)  5:30

Review by Ken Dryden
This is yet another memorable concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio recorded in Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's excellent studio. With bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, Peterson tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of Johnny Mandel's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact. Durham sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though Peterson devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique. Francy Boland's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to Peterson's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by Jones' agile bass and Durham's steady percussion. Peterson cools off his audience with an extended exploration of Benny Carter's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in Oscar Peterson's Exclusively for My Friends series, Travelin' On is warmly recommended; this hybrid Super Audio edition adds to the listener's experience.

Track List:
1. Travelin' On (Traditional)  2:35
2. Emily (Mandel, Mercer)  10:27
3. Quiet Night of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) (DeMoraes, Jobim, Lees)  7:31

Though he made vocal recordings in the early 1950s, Oscar Peterson would seldom sing later
in his career. His reluctance was caused by something that would deter few others: his voice
sounded remarkably like Nat "King" Cole's. It's a talent that dovetails with Peterson's piano
playing and shared roots to make this tribute, recorded in 1965 after Cole's death, especially
effective. For seven of the tracks, Peterson reassembles his great trio, including bassist Ray
Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis, a group originally modeled on Cole's trios of the 1940s. It's a
wonderful mating of approach and material, a group that can swing both mightily and lightly,
and which does so superbly on such tunes as "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You," "Straighten Up
and Fly Right," and the instrumental "Easy Listening Blues." The other five tracks feature an
all-star big band (the pianist is Hank Jones), with arrangements by Manny Albam.
Peterson pays tribute to the popular vocalist of the '50s, singing Cole's signature "Unforgettable"
and the witty "Calypso Blues" with evident regard for the original, but with his own distinctive
phrasing.  ~ Stuart Broomer.
